Shi Gao Can
Shi Gao Can was born on the 8th of December 1886, in Hailou Village, Fujian Province, China. (福建惠安). He left his parents when he was only 13 years old in 1899, and went to find a famous South Shaolin Martial Arts Master named Cao Biao 曹彪 . During that time he also became a disciple of Buddhism, studying the doctrines under the guidance of monk Xingliang (行亮). Almost all the sources agree that Shi Gao Can also studied Chinese Medicine (Zhongyi) under Master Chee Leow in Cheng Tai Mountain Temple. It was the Reverend Hui Jing 慧精 of the Nanhai Puji Temple on Putuoshan Island who would accept Shi Gao Can as his disciple. He was of the 47th (or48th?) generation 2nd chamber of the South Shaolin Tradition. It is believed that here the foundations of Gao Can’s Shaolin Martial Arts were set. For ten years, until 1919, Shi Gao Can trained the martial arts in the Shaolin tradition. Eventually he was going to represent the 48th generation. Shi Gao Can was the only inner circle disciple of his master. He visited Thailand, Burma, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. In every place he visited he treated the sick and spread Buddhism, for which he eventually would gain his greatest fame. He stayed in Indonesia for 21 years and became the abbot of the Zhen Yuan Gong (镇元宫) temple in Medan. From 1949, aged 63, he started teaching Shaolin Martial Arts in Singapore. Shi Gao Can had 18 true diciples, one of which was Sifu Quek Heng Choon. He also had the habit of teaching different things to different people; this lead to variances in the teachings of some of today’s schools linked to Shi Gao Cans disciples. Shi Gao Can taught Martial Arts in the South Shaolin tradition. For further information on Shi Gao Can visit http://www.sekkohsam.tk (from which the text and pictures have been taken). |
